The collective monograph deals in a systematic manner with the major historical and philosophical issues of Plato’s Crito, and focuses especially on two topics that are characteristic of the dialogue as a whole. One is the role of the three speakers of the dialogue (Socrates, Crito, Athenian laws) and the complex relationship between them and the author of the dialogue. The second main topic, which evokes a strong connection to modern and contemporary political thought, is the question of obligation towards the law, the problem of civic obedience, and the related question of social contract. The volume represents a plurality of different approaches to these issues.
